Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my air conditioner not working?

Whether your air conditioner is simply not turning on or has another operational issue, there are several solutions than an experienced licensed HVAC specialist may provide. Your motor may simple be out, the compressor may be compromised, you may below or out of R-410A refrigerant or your thermostat may be broken. Any of these or other problems may be the source of your air conditioner malfunctions.

Why is my air conditioner unit blowing hot air?

If your air conditioner is blowing hot air, there are several checks you can make before calling a professional. First, turn off the unit. Then, check to see if the air filter needs to be changed. After replacing the filter and turning the system back on, it may take up to 12 hours to return to normal. If, after this period, hot air is still coming out, you have a more serious issue that only a licensed, professional HVAC specialist should handle.

Why is my air conditioner unit so noisy?

When your air unit is first turned on, it is perfectly normal for it make an above normal amount of noise. This may be due to the oil making its way through the moving parts or the compressor not being under pressure for several seconds. However, after no more than 10 seconds, the noise should stop. If it doesn’t, the noise may be a signal of a more serious problem such as a low refrigerant charge or an over-charge.

How do I know when it's time to replace my system?

By following these simple guidelines, you can estimate whether or not fixing vs. repairing is the right decision. On average the lifetime of:
- an air conditioning unit is 12-15 yrs
- a furnace is 15-20 yrs
- a boiler is 15-20 yrs

However, these are guidelines. If a unit has been repaired several times, or has had higher than average wear, then even if it's before the average lifetime of a typical system, it might make sense to replace it. Some systems can cost just $3,000 to replace, so if you take into account the age of the system plus the cost of a repair at $500, it probably makes more sense just to replace it.

How do I know if my system is working properly?

Is it starting to make noises? Is it cooling and/or heating all areas of the house sufficiently? Have your utility bills gone up for no apparent reason? Has it been taking longer to cool down or heat up the space?

Any of these are signs that you may need service to avert any further serious damage to your system as well as keep your home or business comfortable for the people and pets in it.
